entergy mississippi makes significant progress following hurricane francine

weather continues to move through north mississippi
jackson, miss. – entergy mississippi crews and contractors are making significant progress following hurricane francine’s initial impact in mississippi thursday morning. as of 4:30 p.m., the storm has caused approximately 11,000 customers to lose power in our service area. crews have worked as quickly and safely as possible to restore power to approximately 6,500 customers.
damage assessments are ongoing and as of 4:30 p.m., most customers who can safely receive power are expected to have theirs restored by thursday night, with some customers expected to be restored friday. as the system continues to move out of north mississippi thursday evening, additional outages could occur.
we have assembled a team of more than 1,500 linemen, vegetation workers, damage assessors and support personnel to work with our entergy teams in the restoration process. after power has been restored to mississippi customers, our crews will be released to assist entergy louisiana and entergy new orleans teams, if needed.
as restoration continues, keep in mind that if you don’t see us working near you, we may be working on another part of the electrical system that you can’t see but that must be repaired to get power to you. however, we also must wait until sustained winds are less than 30 mph to use our bucket trucks. significant flooding and other accessibility challenges due to the storm may affect our ability to reach some areas of our territory and could delay providing estimated restoration times in those communities.
please remember, entergy restoration workers cannot restore power to a location with a damaged meter base, conduit or weather head (the metal pipe extending upward from the structure with electrical cables inside). these items must be repaired by a qualified electrician before our workers can restore power. learn more about the electrical equipment that serves your home.
as with any weather event, please be mindful of the following safety tips:
- live wires can be deadly. stay away from downed power lines. call 1-800-9outage or 1-800-968-8243 to report downed or dangling power lines, damaged or downed poles or other damaged equipment.
- do not trim trees or remove debris on or near downed power lines. only power company crews or their contractors should remove trees or limbs touching power lines. again, stay away from downed power lines.
- keep away from the immediate areas where crews are working. there is always the danger of moving equipment and the possibility of construction materials, limbs or overhead wires falling to the ground.
- if you plan on using a generator for temporary power, get a licensed electrician and disconnect from the utility electric system before hooking up to your main electric panel.
- do not run a generator in a confined space without adequate ventilation. use them only outdoors, following all manufacturers’ safety guidelines.
- turn off any electrical appliances that can easily be turned to the off position until power is restored.
