entergy arkansas has taken measures in advance to ensure we’re winter-ready.</p> <p>according to the national oceanic and atmospheric administration’s climate prediction center, a developing la niña is expected to persist through the winter season causing a warmer and drier season in our service area. despite these predictions, arkansas weather remains unpredictable, and entergy arkansas will be ready for any extreme weather that may affect our state.</p> <p>entergy arkansas crews have performed a significant review of our preparedness and protections against extreme conditions. this includes developing a comprehensive plan to protect our generation, transmission and distribution systems from extreme cold. we have implemented unique readiness plans for each of our power generation resources that include insulating critical equipment and diligently testing protections based on historical operating experience. our transmission team follows a specialized seasonal readiness program that includes inspection and maintenance of critical lines and their associated breakers, transformers and substation distribution feeders going to generation/natural gas facilities. entergy arkansas crews have inspected critical systems and infrastructure across the grid in advance of colder temperatures in order to maintain reliability and resiliency.</p> <p>our winter readiness work follows the recommendations of the north american electric reliability corporation (nerc) and is in compliance with their standards. in addition, entergy arkansas employees recently participated in a winter readiness exercise that included situational drills and tabletop discussions for training and awareness of lessons learned and best practices for winter storm response. in 2021, a winter storm brought sub-zero temperatures, ice accumulation and record snowfall totals across the southern part of the u.s.  while other states experienced challenges, the arkansas public service commission concluded that entergy arkansas and its grid “performed well from an operational perspective during the february 2021 event,” ably handling related outages and power restoration efforts.  </p> <p><strong>vegetation management</strong></p> <ul> <li>the risk of falling tree limbs and branches is a leading cause of power outages during winter weather. entergy arkansas is proactively identifying and mitigating problem areas by taking steps year-round to maintain and control vegetation across our service area. crews have completed the annual clearing of right-of-way areas to minimize the impact of fallen trees or branches following a storm. prior to storms impacting our area, vegetation crews perform pre-storm patrols of circuits to mitigate any imminent threats within the right of way. our year-round storm preparations include our comprehensive vegetation management program and the targeted “ground to sky” vegetation trimming, which removes tree limbs that would typically have been above the power line. our crews also use artificial intelligence and satellite imagery to help predict when trimming may be needed.</li> </ul> <p><strong>prepare for cold weather by maximizing energy efficiency </strong></p> <p>when colder temperatures arrive in the state, heating systems will start running full blast, causing a spike in energy usage. however, staying warm and fire fighters (iaff) local 34 have come together to provide winter coats to elementary school students for “operation warm.” through this partnership, hundreds of students in the little rock school district received new coats wednesday, just before the students’ winter break begins. </p> <p>operation warm is a national nonprofit that manufactures high-quality coats and shoes for children in need. the coats are designed and manufactured by the nonprofit to be long-wearing, water repellent and machine washable, with a warm fleece lining, deep pockets to keep little hands warm even without gloves, and detachable hoods. they come in sizes 2t to adult. since 1998, the organization has provided more than 6 million coats to kids in need across the united states. </p> <p>the iaff union 34 began working with the national nonprofit several years ago after seeing a group of young children shivering at a school bus stop near their firehouse.  </p> <p>“helping people is our job, but it’s environmental grant that will allow the department to contain and cleanup future hazmat incidents on lake hamilton and lake catherine while mitigating spill over from remmel dam into the ouachita river.</p> <p>lhfr used the grant to purchase a rescue and response boat, absorbent booms, diving equipment and other hazmat materials and supplies. some of the materials, most notably the boat, provided the backdrop to today’s announcement event where entergy arkansas senior plant manager braxton bennett and lhfr chief doug davey both spoke about the grant that is already having an impact on the popular central arkansas lakes.</p> <p>“most of our calls for service on the water require some sort of hazmat mitigation,” said davey. “recently, we deployed oil booms and mats to contain and soak up fluids from a front-end loader that rolled into lake catherine. last year, there was large oil sheen on lake hamilton that no near-by agency could mitigate due to a lack of resources. however, through entergy’s generosity, we are now equipped to handle water cleanups and will be able to help preserve and maintain our beautiful lakes for years to come.”</p> <p>lhfr, established in 1958, is the sole emergency fireboat response unit stationed on the 7,460-acred lake hamilton and the 1,940-acred lake catherine. an entergy arkansas employee who lives in the lhfr’s response territory and was aware that the department lacked the resources to handle hazmat incidents encouraged davey to apply for the grant through lhfr’s foundation.</p> <p>“not only are lake hamilton and catherine beautiful recognize the ninth annual utility scam awareness day on wednesday, november 20. utility scam awareness day is an advocacy and awareness campaign focused on educating customers and exposing scammer tactics.  </p> <p>for years, scammers have posed as utility workers and attempted to steal financial information or obtain immediate payment from customers by threatening service interruptions. this is known as a utility impostor scam. </p> <p>the theme of this year’s campaign is “anytime, anyone, anywhere.” customers of all ages and demographics must stay vigilant against utility impostor scams. while advanced digital scam incidents have increased in recent years, in-person and telephone impostor scams are still frequently reported. </p> <p>“utility scams are increasingly sophisticated with
