entergy louisiana winter storm update – 1/16/24, 5 p.m.
01/16/2024
crews and contractors are continuing to restore power across our service area and anticipate returning service to the majority of customers who can safely accept it by tonight.
outages in louisiana reached approximately 19,000 as a result of winter weather, particularly steady wind and freezing rain, galloping power lines and tree limbs impacting electric equipment. galloping occurs when ice builds up on power lines changing its profile and adding additional weight in combination with steady winds, causing them to oscillate and come in contact with one another.
despite the frigid conditions and transportation challenges, crews have been able to make significant progress restoring power, dropping the number of outage cases to approximately 3,000 by 5 p.m. tuesday. most of the remaining customers without power are located in southwest louisiana where greater levels of icing have reportedly occurred and in ascension parish where crews had to deenergize equipment to replace a broken pole.
if you are without power, please check for any damage to the electrical equipment attached to your home or business. if any electrical meters or wiring appear to be damaged, please contact an electrician for assistance. if your electrical equipment appears to have no damage, please call 1-800-9outage (1-800-968-8243).
please be aware the restoration process can be hampered by the surge of instantaneous electrical demand from appliances (heating units, water heaters, etc.) commonly known as cold load when service is restored to your location, potentially overloading protective devices on entergy’s electrical system. to help mitigate this problem, entergy encourages you to turn off or disconnect any electrical heaters or electrical appliances that can easily be turned off until power is restored, and gradually power them on once power has been restored to your location.
we want all of our customer to stay informed. be sure to report any outages via our mobile app at entergy.com/app or online at entergy.com/reportoutage.
please keep your distance from downed power lines and report them immediately by calling 1-800-9outage (1-800-968-8243). additionally, for their safety and yours, please keep your distance from utility crews and their worksites.
