entergy charitable foundation issues $1.03m in grants

new orleans – more than 60 nonprofit groups have been selected to receive $1.03 million in grants from the entergy charitable foundation in the first of three planned award cycles for 2012.

among the entergy shareholder-funded grants is a $200,000 grant to the st. bernard project's veterans corps program, which hires returned war veterans as part of sbp's americorps state program. the program provides veterans meaningful transition from combat to civilian life with emphasis on developing marketable job skills and training.

teach for america received a $191,000 grant to continue funding programs that raised average student achievement in proficiency exams in new orleans by 26.3 percent compared to the state average growth of 6 percent.

among other training, education and humanitarian related grants awarded by the foundation this cycle include:

  • a $35,000 grant to the union rescue mission of little rock, ark., for facilities to provide 100 dining room seats to feed more hungry people, emergency shelter to 122 men each night and expand  live-in alcohol and drug recovery programs for up to 68 men at a time.
  • a $35,000 grant to kids x-press, a magazine created, written and published by students from westchester county, n.y., new york, n.y, newark, n.j., chicago, ill., new orleans, la. and philadelphia, pa. the magazine enhances the language and writing skills of all children, including those from under-resourced communities by linking literacy and public interest topics including energy, science and the environment.
  • a $33,900 grant to habitat for humanity of south haven, mich., to construct a basic solid and accessible energy star and sustainable green built home to improve the life of a qualified partnering family. the home will be environmentally responsible along with being energy and resource-efficient throughout the buildings' life cycle.
