buchanan, n.y. – control room operators shut down indian point’s unit 2 nuclear power plant monday afternoon following an issue with the speed control system on one of the unit’s two main feedwater pumps. feedwater pumps are located on the non-nuclear side of the plant and distribute water to the plant’s four steam generators to be reheated in order to make the steam required to generate electricity.

there was no release of radioactivity and no threat to the safety of workers or the public. plant equipment operated as designed in response to the shutdown.
unit 2 had been online for 355 continuous days prior to today’s shut down.

unit 3 is currently operating at full power and was returned to service on june 22 following maintenance to replace seals that sit between the reactor vessel and vessel lid.
