miss. – entergy’s women in nuclear chapter has been recognized again by the u.s. win organization as the “most reactive” chapter. it is the second time in as many years the chapter has gained national recognition for their educational outreach efforts, this time for their work during 2023’s national nuclear science week.

chapters are judged on the number of activities held during nsw, the number of participating u.s. win members, the number of individuals and public sectors reached and the variety of topics covered.

“it was the dedication, hard work and leadership our team demonstrated last year that allowed us to be awarded, for the second year in a row, the most reactive chapter for 2023’s nuclear science week,” said danielle andreozzi, entergy nuclear design engineer and fleet president of entergy’s u.s. win chapter. “i am so proud to be a part of this organization and company. i have personally seen the effects advocating for nuclear and stem careers has on students and the local community.”

entergy has a win chapter at each of its four nuclear power plants in mississippi, arkansas and louisiana, as well as at its headquarters in jackson. chapters from all five sites participated, with some putting on multiple events. among the outreach efforts were:

nuclear and stem-related activities and giveaways for visitors at the mississippi children’s museum hosted by win volunteers from entergy nuclear’s echelon headquarters

stem day and national science day events at grand gulf nuclear station in port gibson, miss. for girl scouts, boy scouts, a local youth council and students ranging from middle school to high school

a stem fair hosted by river bend station in st. francisville, la. for bains elementary fifth grade students

nuclear science days at russellville middle school held by arkansas nuclear one win members in russellville, ark. for hundreds of sixth- and seventh-grade students

a nuclear and stem-related activities event hosted by waterford 3 steam electric station in killona, la. for k-12 students at the killona community center in the after-school program

nuclear advocacy letters to mississippi legislators from entergy nuclear headquarter employees

in all, their efforts reached more than 1,500 school children, teachers, parents, legislators and other community members.

“this year’s competition for the most reactive chapter was fierce,” said jennifer watkins, nuclear science week lead for the u.s. win communications committee. “we had submissions from 10 chapters who all did an amazing job with their outreach efforts. the creativity and diversity in events were fantastic. approximately 3,000 individuals of all ages were able to explore nuclear science topics—and that doesn’t even cover those who were reached via social media! we love seeing how our chapters promote and support nuclear energy as a carbon-free energy source in our communities.”

u.s. women in nuclear is an organization of individuals who work in nuclear energy and technology fields around the united states. their vision is aimed at positioning the reliability

new orleans – entergy new orleans today announced three separate agreements in principle with the new orleans city council. the total value provided by the three settlements is $252 million. though separate, each settlement provides significant and meaningful customer value – $116 million from the seri settlement; $138 million from the tax matter; and $500,000 from the reliability matter. these agreements include the claims against system energy resources, inc., the entergy subsidiary that is the majority owner of the grand gulf nuclear station in port gibson, miss.; the flow-through to customers of the benefits associated with a recent irs tax settlement; and a long-standing dispute regarding past reliability performance.

“we are pleased to resolve these open issues after constructive conversations with the new orleans city council,” said deanna rodriguez, president and chief executive officer for entergy new orleans. “we appreciate the collaborative effort of all stakeholders in getting to this point, and we look forward to the committee vote next week and to begin flowing the settlement benefits to our customers.”

the settlement with seri includes a global refund of $116 million as well as a reduction in the future costs charged by seri to entergy new orleans for power from grand gulf. the settlement will end years of litigation across several issues.

“i am pleased that we are able to put the seri litigation behind us,” said rod west, entergy group utility president and president of system energy resources, inc. “some of these cases have been pending for close to a decade and resolving them lets us both provide meaningful refunds and lower rates to customers and stop the costly and time-consuming litigation at the federal energy regulatory commission,” west added.

entergy new orleans has already received some of the $116 million settlement from seri, and the remaining amount will be refunded once the federal energy regulatory commission approves the settlement. the lower rates provided for in the settlement will become effective as of june. this agreement is consistent with seri’s previous settlements with entergy mississippi and entergy arkansas, which were both approved by ferc and provided significant refunds to customers at a time when energy bills were high due to record usage.

the seri settlement in principle with the council provides for how the $116 million refund will be credited to customers, with different amounts being credited over different periods of time.

the settlement associated with the irs tax audit provides for a credit to customers of $138 million, to be paid over time. “we are especially pleased by this settlement because, thanks to the constructive engagement by the council, we were able to avoid litigation over these issues and instead quickly get benefits flowing to customers,” said rodriguez.

the reliability settlement resolves a long-standing legal dispute between the council and entergy new orleans regarding a fine issued by the council. this settlement requires entergy new orleans to invest, at its cost, $500,000 in upgrading reliability on its system.

“entergy new orleans has made significant improvements in its reliability performance over the past five years, and it made sense to put aside our legal differences over performance predating those improvements,” rodriguez noted.

similar to the seri agreement, the $138 million credit associated with the tax resolution and the $500,000 reliability credit will be used to help lower customer rates. the rate treatment provided by the council will allow customers in new orleans to enjoy lower energy rates over 25 years.

about entergy new orleans

entergy new orleans, llc miss. – grand gulf nuclear station engineers won big at a recent team-building charity golf tournament, but it was wounded warriors of mississippi that took home the prize.

the tournament, held at clear creek golf course in vicksburg, was a great exercise in collaboration, but also an opportunity to donate to an organization of the winning team’s choice.

“wounded warriors was an easy pick for us,” said trace moore, grand gulf engineer. “my granddad served in vietnam, and i would hear stories of how hard it was on veterans when they came back to the united states.”

along with moore, the winning team included grand gulf engineers gabe bufkin, jeremy smith and zachary thorne.

cheryl bruce, director of wounded warriors of mississippi, began the 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization based out of brandon nine years ago. when her son returned home after receiving injuries during his tour in iraq, he was looking for the same camaraderie he experienced overseas. through bruce’s efforts, not only did her son make connections, but she has also been able to help connect many other mississippi veterans.

“we were thrilled when we found out about the donation,” bruce said. “we don’t write grants or have any major sponsors, so we operate solely on donations. it was very humbling that they chose us with no direct connections to our organization. we are so honored.”

bruce began the program when she realized the national wounded warriors project did not have the funds to help the veterans she met locally through her son.

“if veterans have home repairs or bills or groceries they can’t afford, we help them,” bruce said. “we help with physical problems, too. since the wait for an appointment at the va can be more than eight or nine months, we pay for bills out of pocket when a veteran is in pain or uncomfortable. we also provide counseling, whether it’s marriage counseling or for ptsd.”

there were two flights of the golf tournament, meaning the second winning team chose a separate organization to donate to. because their choice, the salvation army angel tree program, mainly operates around the holiday season, their check presentation will be at a later date.

“it was great to be able to combine a fun, team-building activity with a chance to donate to causes the individual teams chose,” said brad kapellas, grand gulf nuclear station site vice president. “i’m so proud of the employees at grand gulf and their continuous generosity.”

to stay updated about wounded warriors of mississippi, gibson, miss. – william zimmerman was driving to work when he noticed flames coming through the roof of a house. luckily for the family who lives there, william, an entergy nuclear procedure writer, was previously on the grand gulf nuclear station fire brigade and knew exactly how to act.

“i stopped and looked inside the windows and beat on all the doors and was yelling to see if anyone might be in there,” said zimmerman. “i was worried they could be unconscious. i had never driven by a house on fire without firefighters already there. i had to stop and make sure everyone was safe. another lady stopped at the same time i did. i asked her to call 911 so i could check out the house.”

while he was contemplating going in to check for anyone who may be unable to respond, the next-door neighbor came out of her house. she was the mother of one of the homeowners and assured zimmerman no one was inside. fortunately, the family was out of town.

once it was confirmed that the house was empty, zimmerman acted quickly to help prep the house for the firefighters’ arrival.

“i didn’t open any doors or windows, which would just feed the fire and could result in an explosion of unburnt gasses,” zimmerman said.” i turned the breaker off and pulled the meter out of the base before the fire department got there. i know that energized power lines and fire water do not mix.”

“once the port gibson fire department showed up, they also confirmed no one was in the house,” he continued. “i notified them that i pulled the power meter out and told them where i thought the fire started. they broke down the door and went in with their hoses.”

although zimmerman is humble when asked, it is possible he saved 90% of the house. with his quick thinking and commitment to safety, the firefighters were able to get into the house and put out the fire more quickly. because of his previous training with the fire brigade, he was able to safely jump into action.

“i’m so grateful to work with people like william who are alert in unsafe situations and take action to help others,” said grant flynn, general manager of plant operations at 26 jan 2023 13:11:00 -0600refunds ordered by the federal energy regulatory commission paid by seri
state and local regulators to determine how and when customers will receive their refunds

new orleans – entergy announced today that system energy resources, inc., or seri, the subsidiary that owns the grand gulf nuclear station, has begun the process of sending refunds to customers of entergy arkansas, llc, entergy louisiana, llc and entergy new orleans, llc in response to a recently announced order from the federal energy regulatory commission. though seri plans to appeal the ferc order that requires refunds related to seri sales leaseback renewal costs, for the time being, those refunds will be provided to customers under terms that will be decided by state and local regulators. yesterday, seri sent a total of approximately $103 million to the three operating companies. regarding the uncertain tax position case, those cost savings have already been passed on to our customers, and therefore we believe seri has already paid the refunds due under the remedy outlined in ferc’s order.

seri today submitted a compliance refund report to ferc as part of the orderly process established by ferc in docket no. el18-152. the compliance refund report provides the calculation of the refunds related to seri sale leaseback renewal costs and correction of a depreciation error. seri has calculated the total refunds due to each entergy operating company buyer under the unit power sales agreement as follows:

entergy arkansas - $41.6 million.

entergy louisiana - $27.8 million.

entergy new orleans - $34 million.

as a result of the mississippi settlement, seri owes no additional refunds to entergy mississippi. approximately $300 million in refunds and other benefits have already been received by entergy mississippi customers based on the settlement the company made with the mississippi public service commission.

regarding the refunds for the uncertain tax positions issue, a lump sum credit that seri paid in march 2021 has already been passed on to our customers and seri is providing an ongoing monthly credit under the unit power sales agreement over the remaining expected life of grand gulf. we believe those credits fulfill the remedy ferc outlined dec. 23, 2022.

the entergy operating companies receiving refunds will coordinate with their retail regulators to determine how these refunds will be credited to customers.

while seri disagrees with the ferc’s decision to order refunds, seri remains committed to a global settlement as the best means to reach a fair and reasonable resolution to the ongoing disputes at ferc.
//www.dcsportsinc.com/news/refunds-ordered-by-federal-energy-regulatory-commission-paid-by-seri///www.dcsportsinc.com/news/refunds-ordered-by-federal-energy-regulatory-commission-paid-by-seri/?63bf3dc91d74585b26057946wed, regulators to the federal energy regulatory commission on claims against system energy resources, inc., the entergy subsidiary that owns the majority of the grand gulf nuclear station.

"we are following the ferc's regulatory process and plan to file a compliance report detailing the refunds that we believe are required by the ferc order. we will seek rehearing of the ferc's decision regarding the seri sale-leaseback renewal and any further action relative to the ferc order that seri believes appropriate. as we've consistently said, seri's tax strategy was conducted in the best interest of our customers and ultimately saved millions of dollars in operating expenses. those cost savings have already been passed on to our customers, and we believe we have already paid the refunds due under the remedy ferc outlined on the uncertain tax positions taken by seri. we continue to believe a global settlement of all the seri dockets at ferc is in the best interest of all parties. we encourage our regulators to work with us and resolve the outstanding ferc issues for the benefit of our customers."
//www.dcsportsinc.com/news/statement-on-motion-filed-against-system-energy-resources-inc///www.dcsportsinc.com/news/statement-on-motion-filed-against-system-energy-resources-inc/?63b6540f6bc6b43a9875a944thu, 05 jan 2023 08:00:00 -0600federal energy regulatory commission issues key orders regarding system energy resources, inc.
entergy affirms adjusted eps guidance and outlooks; commits to continue to work with regulators on behalf of customers

new orleans – on dec. 23, 2022, the federal energy regulatory commission issued two orders in ongoing proceedings involving the customer rate impacts of the grand gulf nuclear station. seri operates grand gulf and owns or leases 90% of the station.

“we believe friday’s ferc orders are a positive step toward resolving a number of long-standing issues raised by our retail regulators. while we disagree with some elements of ferc’s findings, in particular its ruling on the sale leaseback claim, we are pleased that ferc’s remedy results in no additional refunds due to customers beyond those already provided in 2021 on the uncertain tax positions taken by seri,” said drew marsh, entergy’s chief executive officer. “seri has consistently maintained that its tax strategy was in the best interest of customers and ultimately provided them with millions of dollars in savings. we are committed to working with our regulators to resolve outstanding ferc issues for the benefit of our customers.”

regarding the uncertain tax position issue, ferc’s orders address a series of decommissioning uncertain tax positions that seri took in order to benefit customers. seri assumed the risk of internal revenue service penalties and interest that could have resulted from unsuccessful portions of these positions. the irs ultimately allowed over $100 million of an uncertain tax position seri took in 2015. the remedy in ferc’s order directed seri to compute a refund based on the accumulated deferred income tax, or adit, amounts resulting from the irs’s partial allowance of seri’s 2015 decommissioning uncertain tax position. consistent with ferc’s order, upon resolution with the irs of the 2015 uncertain tax position, seri began to provide an ongoing rate base credit for the adit associated with the successful portion of the uncertain tax position, which is estimated to result in a benefit of $69 million to customers over the remaining expected life of grand gulf. additionally, in 2021, seri provided a one-time credit of $25 million inclusive of interest for the adit created by the 2015 decommissioning uncertain tax position, which is consistent with the directives of ferc’s order. therefore, seri’s position is that it has already satisfied the remedy required in ferc’s order.

ferc’s order also specified that the remedy must not “reestablish” adit balances for tax positions that were denied by the irs, as seri received no tax benefits from tax positions that were not successful. beyond the partial acceptance of the 2015 tax position, the irs did not allow any portion of seri’s other decommissioning uncertain tax positions. under the remedy specified by ferc, for uncertain tax positions that the irs fully disallowed, and for which seri received no tax benefits, no refunds are due. we therefore calculate the remaining refund for the uncertain tax positions issue to be $0. seri intends to file a compliance refund report reflecting that calculation as required by the order, which ferc will review and address in a future order.

on the sale leaseback case, the order calls for seri to refund approximately $149 million, including interest, resulting from the disallowance of $17 million in annual lease payments from 2015 through 2022. taking into account seri’s previous settlement with the mississippi public service commission, the total sale leaseback refund amount is $89 million. the order also states that seri can no longer collect $17 million in annual lease payments on a prospective basis. net of the entergy mississippi settlement, the prospective exclusion would be approximately $10 million annually (pre-tax). seri disagrees with this ruling and will seek rehearing. this sale leaseback renewal was entered into to lower costs to customers, which is a benefit that ferc previously recognized. customers also continue to receive the power produced by the leased portion of the plant.

regarding the financial impacts of these ferc orders, assuming there are no changes to either order upon rehearing, entergy affirms its adjusted eps guidance for 2022 and adjusted eps outlooks for 2023-2025.

grand gulf is the principal asset owned by seri, and it is the largest single-unit nuclear reactor in the united states, employing 675 site workers and providing power to entergy operating company customers in arkansas, louisiana and mississippi.

“the dedicated men and women who work at grand gulf have not been distracted by these ferc orders are a positive step toward resolving a number of long-standing issues raised by our local regulators. while we disagree with some elements of ferc's findings, in particular its ruling on 28 jun 2022 09:09:00 -0500entergy mississippi customers will receive lower energy bills resulting from mpsc settlement
a $300-million settlement ends mississippi’s part in lengthy, multi-state ferc rate dispute

jackson, miss. – entergy mississippi customers will receive credits on their energy bill as early as this summer and future bill reductions over the next several years as part of a $300-million settlement the company has reached with the mississippi public service commission.

earlier this week, entergy officials and mpsc commissioners approved the settlement agreement that ends mississippi’s part in multi-state rate proceedings before the federal energy regulatory commission involving the customer rate impacts of grand gulf nuclear station. entergy operates grand gulf and owns 90% of the station under its subsidiary, system energy resources, inc.

entergy estimates approximately $300 million in benefits to mississippi customers as a result of the settlement. customers will see these benefits in three ways. first, an estimated $200 million of the benefits will be used to offset high fuel prices being incurred to generate electricity. fuel costs are passed through directly to customers with no profit to the company. second, an estimated $35 million of the benefits will be provided as lump sum bill credits to each entergy mississippi customer this year. the $35 million benefit results in a one-time credit of approximately $80 for entergy mississippi’s residential customers. third, customers will receive the remaining benefits of the settlement in the coming years in the form of lower bills than they otherwise would see. in addition, entergy mississippi customers have already received another $50 million in bill credits through prior refunds made during the ferc proceedings.

“by resolving these issues, we can focus on the long-term future of grand gulf nuclear station to ensure it remains the critical, emissions-free power source it is to serve our customers,” said haley fisackerly, entergy mississippi president and ceo. “with natural gas prices having tripled over the last year, raising customer power bills as a result, the low-cost power we get from grand gulf is a financial lifeline to our customers right now.”

the settlement involved more than a dozen separate proceedings, including some that raised decades-old issues, brought by the public service commissions of louisiana, arkansas, the city of new orleans and, in part, mississippi. the mpsc disputed the company’s position on a variety of issues involving the taxing, accounting and financing of the nuclear unit and its impact on customers’ bills.

entergy has long maintained that the disputed positions regarding the taxing, financing, accounting and operating of grand gulf before ferc are proper, well-reasoned and in the best interest of its customers and the company. entergy also believes grand gulf has provided consistent value for its customers through its operations over the years. however, entergy officials explained that the ongoing cost of the dispute at ferc and the uncertainty it created for customers, employees and stockholders led the company to seek a resolution.

“while no settlement is perfect for all parties involved, we applaud the mississippi commissioners for taking this action. they recognized the need to represent their constituents’ interests while at the same time securing the long-term future of a vital resource to mississippi consumers and mississippi’s economy,” said fisackerly. entergy officials added that they hope the other states involved in the ferc dispute will follow mississippi’s lead and seek to settle the remaining claims.

entergy officials will work closely with the mpsc to make sure the customer bill credits for its more than 461,000 customers in mississippi are implemented as soon as possible. in addition, fisackerly said he appreciated those entergy employees who have long worked with ferc on these issues and those employees at grand gulf who have reached several performance milestones despite the lengthy regulatory dispute.

“the more than 850 men and women at grand gulf have not been distracted by these issues and have continually focused on safely and reliably serving our customers. in the last year alone, they have achieved not only the highest status in the u.s. nuclear regulatory commission’s overall performance matrix, but also have set all-time station records for gross and net generation in megawatt-hours,” said fisackerly. “the future is bright for grand gulf and its important place as a clean, affordable and reliable energy resource for our mississippi customers.”

about from service for the final time on may 20. the plant was originally scheduled to permanently shut down on may 31, but after careful monitoring, operators made the conservative decision to shut down the plant early due to the performance of a control rod drive seal. the final shut down marks the end of more than 50 successful years of safe, secure, and reliable generation of clean, carbon-free electricity at palisades, which began commercial operation in 1971. following the safe removal of used fuel from the reactor, the facility will be transferred to holtec international for purposes of a safe and timely decommissioning, under the terms of an agreement between entergy and holtec international.

announced in 2017, the shutdown of palisades completes entergy’s strategy to exit the merchant power generation business and coincides with the expiration of the station’s 15-year power purchase agreement with consumers energy.

“the enduring legacy of palisades is the thousands of men and women who safely, reliably, and securely operated the plant, helping power southwest michigan homes and businesses for more than 50 years,” said darrell corbin, site vice president. “we refer to a credo at palisades: ‘palisades proud.’ thanks to the pride, professionalism, and hard work of our 600-member team, we finished palisades proud. we are also grateful to the local community for its support of the plant and for the strong partnership we have enjoyed all these years.”

the shutdown completes a remarkable operating history for the 800-megawatt facility. the facility shut down after continuously generating electricity for 577 days since it was last refueled – a site and world record production run for a plant of its kind. palisades remains ranked in the u.s. 11 mar 2022 09:33:00 -0600grand gulf begins scheduled refuel, ensuring future reliability
refuel begins after year of record generation

port gibson, mississippi – grand gulf team members joined with hundreds of employees and contracting partners this weekend to commence the station’s 23rd scheduled refueling and maintenance outage following a record-setting year of power generation.

control room operators removed the plant from the grid at 9 p.m. saturday, feb. 26, placing the plant in safe shutdown while refueling takes place. refueling outages typically last several weeks, allowing for safe, secure and reliable operation when the refuel and other maintenance activities are finished.

hundreds of contract workers are joining the grand gulf team, along with entergy employees from other nuclear plants and headquarters. the influx of contract workers throughout the duration of the outage, many from outside the area, and their associated spending will provide an economic boost to the local communities.

grand gulf is one of the largest operators of its kind in the world, and the plant enters its 2022 refuel after setting all-time station records for both gross generation and net generation in megawatt-hours. in 2021, grand gulf’s net generation was 11,731,254 megawatt-hours, with gross generation of 12,200,125 megawatt-hours. gross generation is total generation, and net is the amount of total generation produced minus the electricity used to operate the power plant. previously, grand gulf’s all-time record was in 2015, with 11,715,621 and 12,160,896 megawatt-hours, respectively.

nuclear power plants around the world schedule refuels every 18 to 24 months, typically in the spring or fall when power demands are lower.

what is a refuel?

nuclear refuels are similar to fueling a vehicle, beginning when plant operators take the unit offline. then work begins. nuclear professionals remove a portion of the fuel from the reactor, shuffle current fuel rods and replace the removed fuel with new fuel.

while the unit is offline, the team completes maintenance work and other projects to improve reliability. every detail of a refueling outage is meticulously planned and every grand gulf worker plays an important role.

to ensure the safety of grand gulf employees and supplemental workers, covid-19 prevention protocols will be enforced. those protocols include mask-wearing when appropriate, social distancing, frequent cleaning and disinfecting, as well as having employees stay home if they feel sick.

with its 800-plus employee workforce, grand gulf has a robust impact through community engagement, such as its home winterization drive, park cleanup and other volunteer efforts that help improve local lives while teambuilding for the plant.

grand gulf, owned by entergy (90 percent) and cooperative energy (10 percent), is known worldwide for its generation capabilities. since 1985, the plant has provided an economic boost to the community while providing low-cost power to entergy’s customers. additionally, grand gulf and its employees maintain a strong presence in the communities they serve by spending more than $9 million per year with local companies, and through charitable contributions and donations that promote community development, education and the environment.

about entergy

entergy, a fortune 500 company headquartered in new orleans, powers life for 3 million customers across 28 may 2021 11:09:00 -0500entergy’s indian point unit 3 to permanently shut down
buchanan, n.y. – control room operators at 沙特vs墨西哥让球’s (nyse: etr) indian point energy center unit 3 will shut down the nuclear reactor by friday, april 30, for the final time, marking the end of nearly 60 successful years of safe, virtually carbon-free power generation at the facility.

announced in 2017, the shutdown of both operating units at indian point is pursuant to a settlement agreement with the state of new york and was the result of a number of factors, including sustained low current and projected wholesale energy prices that reduced revenues. indian point unit 2 shut down as scheduled on april 30, 2020.

“indian point has been operated and maintained at the highest levels of reliability, safety and security for many years, and unit 3 has been online continuously since april 9, 2019 – setting a new world record for continuous days of operation,” said chris bakken, entergy’s chief nuclear officer. “indian point’s enduring legacy will be the thousands of men and women who operated the plant safely, reliably, and securely, while helping to power new york city and the lower hudson valley for nearly 60 years. we owe those who serve now, along with those who came before them, a debt of gratitude.”

plant breaks world record for continuous days of operation

the shutdown completes a remarkable recent operating history for the 1,041-megawatt unit 3, which currently has generated electricity continuously for 751 days since it was last refueled in april 2019. the mark is a world record for commercial light water nuclear power reactors. the previous record for continuous days online was 739 and set in 2006 by exelon’s lasalle unit 1 station. there currently are more than 300 light water reactors operating in more than 20 countries.

operational history

entergy purchased indian point unit 3 in 2000 and indian point unit 2, along with the permanently shut down unit 1, in 2001. following entergy’s purchase from two separate owners, station personnel were aligned under one owner and reliability was enhanced. gross combined generation at unit 2 and unit 3 prior to entergy’s purchase of the two units averaged around 10 million megawatt hours each year; in the 20 years following entergy’s purchase, gross generation averaged around 17 million megawatt hours each year. indian point was a workhorse for the southeastern new york electrical grid, generating approximately 25% of the power consumed annually in new york city and the lower hudson valley.

unit 1 operated from 1962 to 1974. unit 2 operated from 1974 to 2020. unit 3 operated from 1976 to 2021.

entergy employees at indian point energy center

following entergy’s shutdown announcement in january 2017, entergy made several commitments to its employees at indian point, including:

no reduction in headcount at indian point energy center during the “gap year,” that is, the year between unit 2’s shutdown (april 2020) and unit 3’s shutdown, and no headcount reduction until after unit 3 was permanently shut down and defueled.

any employee who was willing to relocate would be provided a job for which they were qualified.

as part of the company sale agreement with holtec international, the new owner of the plant post-shutdown will hire more than 300 current entergy employees for phase 1 of decommissioning. holtec agreed to honor existing collective bargaining agreement contracts with union employees at indian point.

approximately 170 employees at indian point plan to relocate or have already relocated to continue working with entergy.

decommissioning indian point

in april 2019, entergy announced the proposed post-shutdown sale of the subsidiaries that own unit 1, unit 2, and unit 3 to a holtec international subsidiary for prompt decommissioning. holtec and its team plan to initiate decommissioning at indian point promptly following regulatory approval and transaction close, and it expects to release portions of the site for re-use by the mid-2030s, nearly 40 years sooner than if entergy continued to own the facility.

in november 2019, entergy and holtec filed a petition with the new york public service commission concerning the proposed transfer of indian point and a license transfer application with the u.s. nuclear regulatory commission. the nrc approved the license transfer in november 2020.

on april 14, 2021, subsidiaries of entergy and mich. – 沙特vs墨西哥让球 and holtec international, through their affiliates, jointly submitted a license transfer application today with the u.s. nuclear regulatory commission requesting approval to transfer the nrc licenses for the palisades nuclear plant to holtec following its shutdown and permanent defueling in the spring of 2022.

“holtec’s plan to safely accelerate the palisades decommissioning schedule by more than four decades provides the potential for site redevelopment much sooner than if entergy continued to own the facility after shutdown,” said chris bakken, entergy executive vice president nuclear operations and chief nuclear officer. “the completion of major decommissioning activities on an accelerated timeframe is important to the local community, which could benefit from economic opportunity at the site.”

holtec’s filings detail its plan to complete the dismantling, decontamination, and remediation of palisades to nrc standards by 2041, more than 40 years sooner than if entergy continued to own the facility and selected the maximum 60-year nrc safstor option for decommissioning. as part of the agreement between the companies, holtec will provide job opportunities for around 260 of entergy’s employees who currently work at palisades. entergy previously announced a plan to find a position within its company for qualified employees who are willing to relocate.

“this key regulatory filing sets in motion a new beginning for palisades and the local community,” said holtec’s president and chief executive officer, dr. kris singh. “as a proven leader in decommissioning, with a dynamic fleet of projects around the nation and the globe, palisades’ neighbors and stakeholders are assured a strong and steadfast commitment to safety, precision, and efficiency as our holtec team decommissions this facility and brings a new economic future to the region.”

“holtec’s plan to safely accelerate the palisades decommissioning schedule by more than four decades provides the potential for site redevelopment much sooner than if entergy continued to own the facility after shutdown.”

- chris bakken, entergy executive vice president nuclear operations and chief nuclear officer

the application also requests approval of the license transfer of entergy’s already-decommissioned big rock point facility near charlevoix, mich., where only an independent spent fuel storage installation remains.

following nrc regulatory approval and transaction close, holtec will assume ownership of the palisades site, its nuclear decommissioning trust fund, real property, and used nuclear fuel. it will also assume ownership of the big rock point isfsi property and used nuclear fuel.

in addition to today’s license transfer application, holtec submitted to the nrc a post-shutdown decommissioning activities report and decommissioning cost estimate, which describe holtec’s decommissioning plan, schedule, and cost estimate of planned decommissioning activities for palisades. holtec also submitted an exemption request to allow the use of the palisades ndt for spent fuel management and site restoration activities.

holtec’s schedule calls for the movement of all spent nuclear fuel from the onsite spent fuel pool to dry cask storage on the palisades isfsi by 2025. after all spent fuel is safely moved to the isfsi, major decommissioning work will commence in approximately 2035, allowing the ndt balance to grow.

if the transaction is completed, palisades and big rock point would join holtec’s growing fleet of decommissioning plants. the nrc previously approved license transfer applications for the shutdown oyster creek nuclear generating station in new jersey from exelon corporation to holtec and for the shutdown pilgrim nuclear power station in massachusetts from entergy to holtec, and the transfer of the indian point energy center from entergy to holtec following shutdown of its remaining unit (indian point unit 3), which is scheduled for april 2021. in all cases, the nrc concluded that holtec affiliate holtec decommissioning international met the regulatory, legal, technical, and financial requirements necessary to decommission those facilities.

cautionary note regarding forward-looking florida, new jersey, ohio, and pennsylvania in the u.s., and globally in brazil, dubai, india, south africa, spain, u.k., and ukraine. holtec’s principal business concentration is in the nuclear power industry. holtec has played a preeminent role since the 1980s by densifying wet storage in nuclear plants’ spent fuel pools deferring the need for and expense of alternative measures by as much as two decades at over 110 reactor units in the u.s. and abroad. dry storage and transport of nuclear fuel is another area in which holtec is recognized as the foremost innovator and industry leader with a dominant market share and an active market presence in eighteen countries. among the company’s pioneering endeavors are the world’s first below-ground consolidated interim storage facility being developed in new mexico and a 160-megawatt walk away safe small modular reactor, smr-160. the smr-160 is developed to bring cost competitive carbon-free energy to all corners of the earth including water-challenged regions. holtec is also a major supplier of special-purpose pressure vessels and critical-service heat exchange equipment such as air-cooled condensers, steam generators, feedwater heaters, and water-cooled condensers. virtually all products produced by the company are built in its three large manufacturing plants in the u.s. and one in india. thanks to a solid record of consistent profitability and steady growth since its founding in 1986, holtec has no history of any long-term debt and enjoys a platinum credit rating from the financial markets. nearly 100 u.s. and international patents protect the company’s intellectual property from predation by its global competitors and lend predictable stability to its business base. to learn more about holtec 22 dec 2020 09:52:00 -0600license transfer request for indian point approved by nrc
transfer of indian point to decommissioning specialty firm planned after permanent shutdown

buchanan, new york – the u.s. nuclear regulatory commission today approved the application to transfer the licenses for indian point energy center’s nuclear power plants unit 1, unit 2 and unit 3, from 沙特vs墨西哥让球 (nyse: etr) subsidiaries to a holtec international subsidiary for prompt decommissioning. the transfer of indian point to holtec, currently targeted for may 2021, would occur following the satisfaction of all closing conditions, including the permanent shutdown and reactor defueling of unit 3, which is the last operating power plant at indian point. unit 3 will shut down by april 30, 2021.

entergy and holtec jointly filed a license transfer application with the nrc in november 2019, requesting approval for the transfer of indian point, along with its nuclear decommissioning trusts (ndts) and decommissioning liability, from current owner entergy to holtec.

“the nrc’s approval of the indian point license transfer is a critical milestone as we move closer to completing the transaction,” said leo denault, entergy’s chairman and chief executive officer. “the sale of indian point following its permanent shutdown will benefit the community by enabling the facility to be removed and the site remediated decades sooner than otherwise thought possible. stakeholders in the community will benefit from a dismantling and decommissioning process that can begin promptly following shutdown next year.”

in its decision, the nrc determined that holtec possesses the required technical and financial qualifications to decommission indian point safely and in accordance with nrc requirements. previously, the nrc approved two separate transfers of retired nuclear power plants to holtec for prompt decommissioning; holtec currently owns and is decommissioning the shutdown oyster creek nuclear power plant in new jersey and the shutdown pilgrim nuclear power plant in massachusetts. additionally, the nrc previously approved the license transfer of vermont yankee to northstar group services in support of entergy’s effort to divest of its merchant nuclear fleet to focus on its regulated and transformation strategies.

holtec plans to begin the decommissioning process promptly upon taking ownership, and as part of the agreement between the companies, will initially provide job opportunities for approximately 300 of entergy’s current employees at indian point. holtec also has agreed to honor the collective bargaining agreements that apply to current employees.

separate from the nrc approval, entergy and holtec previously filed a petition with the new york public service commission requesting a ruling disclaiming psc jurisdiction or abstaining from review of the proposed transaction, or, in the alternative, an order approving the proposed transaction. that petition remains pending before the psc.

holtec’s plan for decommissioning will result in the release for re-use of the vast majority of the site in the 2030s, with the exception of the independent spent fuel storage installation and its security perimeter – the area where spent nuclear fuel is safely stored in dry casks until the u.s. department of energy transfers the spent fuel offsite. as part of its plan, holtec expects to move all of the indian point spent nuclear fuel into dry casks within about three years following facility shutdown in 2021. holtec has a pending application with the nrc for a consolidated interim storage facility in new mexico, which could eventually store spent nuclear fuel from indian point and other u.s. nuclear power plants.

about entergy

沙特vs墨西哥让球 is an integrated energy company engaged primarily in electric power production and retail secure, reliable operation

covert, mich. - entergy’s palisades power plant returned to service today, following the successful completion of its final refueling and maintenance outage, sending electricity to the grid after a scheduled shutdown that began august 30. in 2017, entergy announced that palisades would close in the spring of 2022.

“our dedicated employees and supplemental workers have worked diligently during the past several weeks to complete hundreds of tasks, inspections, and upgrades to prepare palisades for safe and reliable operations as we enter our final cycle of electrical generation,” said darrell corbin, site vice president and entergy’s top official at palisades. “entergy’s focus remains on operating palisades safely and reliably and we will continue to make the necessary investments into the plant.”

entergy invested more than $86.5 million during the outage to ensure safety, security, and reliability at the facility through plant closure. the plant’s 600 full-time nuclear professionals worked with approximately 800 skilled supplemental workers to replace fuel in the reactor, as well as inspect and upgrade hundreds of pipes, pumps, electrical components, and other equipment.

entergy remains committed to the safe, secure, and reliable operation of palisades until the plant’s permanent shutdown in the spring of 2022. entergy continues to move forward with its plans for a post-shutdown sale of palisades to a subsidiary of the u.s.-based company holtec international for purposes of accelerated decommissioning. the planned transaction is subject to conditions of closing, including approval from the nuclear regulatory commission.

entergy takes the health, safety and security of its employees, customers, communities, business partners, and facilities seriously. for this reason, palisades took preventative measures necessary to keep employees, visiting outage contractors, and our community safe amidst the covid-19 pandemic. in addition to a robust and successful on-site covid mitigation plan, the company’s efforts included paying for supplemental workers to stay in individual local hotel rooms, as well as purchasing daily meals to be delivered from area restaurants, all in order to further promote off-site social distancing. this mitigation effort alone amounted to entergy spending more than $4.3 million in the local community, providing an added economic boost to the region. meals that workers did not consume were donated to a local food bank.

about palisades and entergy

palisades power plant, in covert, mich., generates 800 megawatts of reliable and virtually carbon-free electricity – enough to safely and securely power 800,000 homes in southwest michigan. palisades is recognized as a top performer within the nuclear industry and ranks in the u.s. nuclear regulatory commission’s highest safety category.

沙特vs墨西哥让球 is an integrated energy company engaged primarily in electric power production and retail distribution operations. entergy owns and operates power plants with approximately stakeholders, it’s critical that we do so in a manner that promotes a cleaner, more sustainable future.” - leo denault, entergy chairman of the board and ceo

the commitment to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 builds on entergy’s 20-year history of climate action and positions the company for five decades of leadership toward advancing a cleaner and more sustainable future for all stakeholders. in 2001, entergy became the first u.s. utility to limit its carbon dioxide emissions voluntarily. since then, the company has renewed and strengthened its goals:

2020: the company is currently outperforming by 8% its commitment to maintain carbon emissions through 2020 to 20% below year 2000 levels.

2030: in 2019, entergy announced in its 2019 climate report a goal to reduce by half the carbon emissions rate (pounds per megawatt hour) in 2030 compared to year 2000 levels.

2050: an overview of a potential path the company could take to net-zero emissions is available here. the company will publish additional information about the commitment later this fall.

entergy already is one of the cleanest large-scale electric utilities in the country, as noted in the 2020 benchmarking air emissions report conducted by energy and environmental advisory firm m. j. bradley & associates, an erm group company. mjb&a is an advisor to entergy on its climate and net-zero strategy.

“entergy’s net-zero commitment breaks ground with important near-term investments in clean energy technologies that will be needed to transform the power generation fleet,” said robert lacount, executive vice president at mjb&a. “entergy’s climate and energy analysis highlights the critical role for multiple technologies – including renewables and hydrogen – to achieve a carbon-free electric system.”

while the company’s new commitment looks far into the future, entergy is leading today in innovative technology engagement and cross-sector collaboration to support the technology, innovation and policies needed to meet our 2050 commitment, including the midcontinent power sector collaborative roadmap to decarbonization, the <a
