entergy mississippi finds ‘jobs for youths’

08/27/2015

this summer, entergy mississippi introduced four high school students to what their future could look like with the “jobs for youths” high school internship pilot. the program was developed by george cossar, customer service representative, bobby shipp, line supervisor, and anna hughes, regional sourcing recruiter, and focused on students in the northern region.

“we wanted to give students the opportunity to see what a great company entergy is to work for,” said hughes. “this helps them understand the many career opportunities available to them after they complete technical school or college. an added plus for the students is that the internship will look great on their résumés!”

the six-week long internships had the students primarily assisting the storeroom manager. in addition to learning about how the company works and what the materials are, the interns had time to shadow employees who worked in their fields of interest.

“having the interns wasn’t just good for them, it was also good for us,” said shipp. “this was a great mentoring opportunity for our employees, helping to build their leadership skills.”

the four student interns were:

1. aaron thompson, southaven
2. cortez howard, tunica
3. jeffery patton, senatobia
4. jonthomas evans, grenada

“the ‘jobs for youths’ pilot was very successful,” said cossar. “so much so, that we’re looking at expanding the program to all three regions in mississippi next summer.”

“i learned that safety for yourself and those around you is the most important job anyone does.” – jonthomas evans
“i will do all that i can to become a senior lineman! the guys here are my role models. i can see myself working here in the future!” – cortez howard
