an air-conditioned home is your refuge from the hot summer weather. if your air conditioning system is starting to lose its cool, don't sweat it. there are steps you can take to make your home more comfortable and save money.

beyond the constant comfort complaints from everyone in your household, there are other signs that your cooling system may be in trouble:

  • some rooms are hotter than others

  • the system is too noisy

  • the air conditioner runs non-stop

  • your home feels humid

fixing the problem

if you are experiencing any of these issues, start with your thermostat. it could be that the battery is too low or you have an older model that's malfunctioning. replace the batteries if needed, or consider upgrading to a wi-fi-enabled programmable thermostat. newer smart models come with cool features, such as remote control.

if the thermostat isn't the issue, contact a qualified hvac professional to inspect your system. make sure you understand exactly what the problem is and what repair work would be involved to fix it. get a detailed cost estimate and information about any warranties on work performed. consider getting multiple estimates before authorizing any repairs.

upgrade for savings and performance

if your cooling system is truly past its prime, consider upgrading to a new energy star®-certified unit. energy star systems are independently certified to use less energy than standard units while still providing the comfort and performance you expect.

although traditional central air conditioning systems provide efficient comfort, air-source and geothermal heat pumps take efficiency to a whole new level. air-source heat pumps pull warm air from inside the home and release it outdoors. geothermal systems use underground pipes containing a water solution. the pipes integrate with your central air unit, pulling excess heat and releasing it in the ground.

both systems work in reverse to provide efficient space heating. because they move heat rather than create it, heat pump systems can provide efficiencies of up to 500% or more.

once you have an air conditioning system operating at peak performance, you can sit back and enjoy the comfort, and the cool savings.
